New Coordinator of the área de inmigración
El área de inmigración is meeting again with many new members and a new coordinator. It has as its objective to support the LGTB immigrants of Madrid, opening up a space of their own in Chueca and in COGAM. It is a space to discuss themes with importance for the LGTB immigrant community, which can feel just as excluded in their immigrant community as they do in the Spanish LGTB community.
The área draws upon the presence of Lizethe Álvarez, a board member of COGAM and an immigrant from Colombia. It is also attended by immigrants of all ages and various professions, who have arrived anywhere from Latin America to the Phillipines. Spaniard allies also come to support the objectives of this community.
It has as its goal to plan the first simposium on LGTB immigration in Madrid. It also seeks to support a group of Filipino artists who are planning a "Miss Gay" pageant as a way to teach the rest of the LGTB community about Filipino queer culture.
The coordinator, Jordan Dunn, is a university student who comes from New York City for six months of studies. While he travels under a student visa, in New York he was very much a part of the activism of the immigrant community, both queer and non-queer. While he volunteered as a tutor in a Mexican-American community center in Brooklyn, he also applied his efforts to the Queer Union at New York University, where he planned several events which dealt with the intersection between migration and sexuality. Although the last immigrants in his family were his great-grandparents, it is a story he keeps living in the streets of New York where his best friend--from Bangladesh--resides in the same neighborhood his family once lived in upon arriving from Eastern Europe.
Attached is an example of the events of the Queer Union at New York University (NYU).
